What is Britpop?

Britpop is most commonly described as a subgenre of alternative rock. This type of music is a fairly recent phenomenon, first emerging in the early 1990s in the United Kingdom. Originating from the British indepedent music scene, the sound is clearly influenced by older pop songs of the 1960s and 1970s. Additionally, Many of the songs in the Britpop genre are reactions to cultural trends and happening from the late 1980s. Many of the Britpop bands became sensations in America around the same time, as the bands tended to go on tour around the U.S. to gain awareness of their style as well as their messages.
